The Globaloria Program
The swift global expansion of the Internet in the past decade holds significant promise for people everywhere in the world, and especially for children and adolescents. The World Wide Workshop Foundation is harnessing this great potential through its newest program, Globaloria. Globaloria is an edu-social network of programmable websites and related wikis and blogs to teach high-potential youth and young adults (13 and older) in underserved communities to become makers of interactive games and simulations and wiki masters, while deepening their understanding of a curricular area.
The Globaloria program is designed to offer an alternative learning experience and approach that engages young people with technology development, and instills in them a desire for personal and professional growth, team work, and a commitment to working hard on creative and expressive projects of their own invention and passion. The result is young people armed with the life and livelihood skills they need to meaningfully contribute to their local and global community.
The 'My Global Life' Project
My Global Life (MyGLife.org) is the first initiative of the Globaloria program. It is a worldwide network of educational, programmable websites and related wikis designed to empower youth in developing countries and emerging markets to explore, learn, create and collaborate online -- that is, to achieve digital literacy. The specific goal of this project is to help the world’s youth experience and master technology tools and methods for democracy and globalization. Site users are mentored to learn Internet technology skills (including wiki development, graphic design and Flash programming skills), build global awareness, and at the same time, experience positive communication with other communities.
In October 2006, 38 Israeli Jewish and Arab adolescents from underserved communities came together in Netanya, Israel to become the first group of young people to create, communicate and collaborate in the MyGLife network. Cisco provided the seed funding for MyGlife.org and worked closely with the Globaloria team and a local NGO, Tapuach, to get the pilot off the ground.
Since joining the online network, impact research has shown participants have already begun mastering professional and life skills including IT and networking skills, Flash, HTML, Wiki, presentation and how to virtually collaborate in open-source and wiki-based environments.
2007 Plans for Expansion
- Higher-ed Communities: This year, students at the American University in DC, and two clubs at CU at Boulder (TAM Club and Game Developer's Club) pilot the Globaloria platforms as part of a curriculum for learning and collaborating on game-design and game clubs. Their work and feedback impact the program’s ongoing development worldwide for a university level deployment. We are cultivating future mentors and experts for our socio-educational network.
- Teen Communities: With new and existing partners, additional Globaloria communities in Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East will introduce Globaloria to high-potential and traditionally underserved youth ages 13-18.
- Child Communities: “Globaloria, Jr.” for 6 – 12 year old children.
