My Name

My name is William but I go by Bill. William is German in origin and means "protection" while Bill, the shortened form of William, is English in origin and means "resolute."

My School

I teach at Capital High School which can be visited at www.capitalhigh.org. Our mascot is a cougar. I will be working with a two groups of both Biology and Advanced Biology students that range in age from 15-18, covering grades 9-12. I am really excited about incorporating this program into a core curricular class. I also teach Dual Credit Biology.

Learning Stories: A Reflection on Globaloria Year 2

This is your brain on Globaloria

As an experienced partner with Globaloria, I was very excited to expand on my afterschool program with HSTA. I quickly ran into an old, familiar issue; student motivation. As students in HSTA, sometimes the only motivation that I had available in an ungraded, unstructured environment was the snacks provided by HSTA. This year, I will be correcting by that by incorporating Globaloria into my Biology classes where I expect motiviation to increase. Two instances, though, made it all worthwhile. The first thing that I found promising was in the choice of game topic selected by my students. They chose to address teen pregnancy through a game called A Girl's Choice. This showed they really got the concept of taking gaming into the social universe. The other was in the dedication demonstrated by a student, Alexia, in moving the appointment to remove her painful wisdoem teeth to another week so as to not miss the final presenation and let herself or any of her teammates down. Thanks to those and other day-to-day light bulbs going off made this all very much worthwhile.

My Blog

My students will communicate through My Blog.

About Me

Hometown - Charleston, WV

Favorite food(s)- Chinese

Favorite music - Queen, Apocalyptica, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Cyndi Lauper

Want to visit - Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, Africa for a photo safari, Alaska for whale watching

Hobbies - I like to read, write, camp, hike, workout, walk, go to the movies, and go bowling.

Passionate issues - I am very concerned about the environment and animal conservation.

Favorite ‘gadget’ and why - My favorite gadget is my laptop so I can write when and where I want to write.

Started using computers - I started using computers when I was 11 on an old TRS-80. Now, I use computers to create educational products and tools, data organization, online gaming, chat, email, social interactions, and research.

Using the internet - I enjoy online gaming (WOW and Guildwars) and chatting through email and IM.

MyGLife Hopes - I hope to learn more programming skills, to pass that information on to my students, and to help them design interactive games as well as create games for use in my own classroom.

My Dream Project

My Dream Project would be to create a game that shows the impact of pollution in an aquatic environment using an alien shark as the character.

My Personal Teaching Philosophy

My personal teaching philosophy is still growing. I am seeing education much more as a hands on continous lesson. I believe that students should do to learn and be reinforced or directed to the proper outcomes only in main ideas or themes. Speculation and trial should be encouraged more so than rote memorization.
