My Philosophy
"I find teaching to be a journey I take with my students; sometimes I'm the leader, sometimes I'm following. I often begin a class and have no idea where it will end. It makes life more interesting for all involved."

Hey there. I'm a professor at Shepherd University in the Communications Department. I'm still relatively new to academia. I started my career as a graphic designer, moved onto the Web in the early 90s, studied marketing, and founded three .com companies. I'm happiest working in education because I feel like I'm doing something really worthwhile. It also gives me ample opportunity to work on my own creative projects. So many of my students are technophobes, it is great to open them up to the opportunities offered by tech and allay their fears. Both my parents were teachers, so it kind of runs in the family. I teach courses that combine a love of technology and design with social issues and popular culture. Some people call this area intermedia.

  • Computer Mediated Communication: An introduction to Web development, blogging, social networking etc.
  • Advertising and Imagery: A look at the way advertisements reflect and shape our society. The second half of the class forms the students into a working ad agency. We have created pro-bono campaigns against mountain top removal.
  • Graphic Novel: Yes I like comics. You can read some of my student's work on our Graphic Novel Wiki.
  • Game Design: We both analyze games and game theory and make our own.
  • Advanced Internet Technologies: This is the follow-up to Computer Mediated.
  • Motion Graphics: From film titles to music videos, we create cool stuff. The example below is by a senior that just graduated.

Working at Shepherd also gives me a flexible work schedule to be with my family. (Husband David and three great kids.) In addition to teaching at Shepherd, I'm just finishing up my MFA in computer Arts New Media from Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I"m doing it all online.

So here's the Globalaria template for my info...
