PLAYING TO LEARN assignments

Pick two games you played before and write a review about each of them. Choose one professional and one student made game.

Make sure you include the following points in your reviews:

-Kute Little Aliens The purpose of this game is to build a society on Earth. It makes me think of the Sims logically but not in any other aspect at all. You have to make decisions about what you want to do. You have two choices and if you make the wrong choice you get to start back at that question and try again. The design of the game reminds me of really old floppy disk games. It was kind of cute but not the biggest hit. There was a glitch halfway through the game that did not allow me to go further. That needs to be addressed. It wasn't exciting for me since the developer made it virutally impossible for me to screw up and lose. Change some things about this and it will be greatly improved.

-Scuba Diver This game reminded me of a certain level on Super Mario where he is in the water and has to avoid the fish and other objects that are trying to get him. I found it pretty fun. The graphics were nice. I'd like to know where the developer got them/how they were made. For improvement purposes, I would suggest giving the audience a choice of differnt scuba divers. Not to sound femenist but the scuba diver was a male and not all of the people playing the game will want a male. It's good to give choices.

-Teen Pregnancy My mom works at the Health Department in Augusta, WV so I know a lot about all of that jazz. This game was a board game that asked you questions about teen pregnancy. The graphics were sub par. I'm not sure where the developer got the questions but I felt like some of them were opinionated. She should stick to strictly factual questions. There were also some misspellings and confusing questions.

   * Name and purpose of the game
   * Describe it from a learner's point of view and a developer’s point of view
   * Design Analysis (Does it look good? Does it clearly illustrate the scientific the concept?)
   * Usability Analysis (Is it clear what you need to do as a user? Does it work well?)
   * Suggestions for improvement
   * 2-3 things that you would like to learn how to do (in terms of functionality, design or content)

CHOOSING A TOPIC assignments

1. Explore Subjects, Topics and Concepts that Matter to You

  • Brainstorm specific topics and concepts in each subject area that you want to explore in a game. Think about something that is really hard to learn. How a game can help represent this complex concept, and explain it in a playful and experiential way.

  • Now choose ONE Concept to Focus On: __Non-renewable Resources__
    • You can't get them back. Once they're all gone, we're screwed.
    • In the game, people will be given the chance to get more money but it will be impossible for them to get any oil back.
    • People would eat locally and contribute less to the massive amount of oil spent to transport foods to the area.

2. Identify a Game Genre For Exploring Your Topic

  • Genre 1: Life Simulation
    • Why I chose it: I am a huge fan of these life simulation games. I have noticed that a lot of people like to play games where they get to be someone else. If your life is too boring, there's always the option of exploring a much different role. We can escape from reality and we love it.

  • Genre 2: Board Games
    • Why I chose it: Board games are fun to play with friends and younger children can learn these games a lot quicker. It's more hands on which helps the development of the game.

3. Find Content Resources for Your Game Topic

Find a set of online and real world resources where you can gather facts, images and sounds to use in your game.

  • Facts:
    • URL: gogreen.com
    • Real world resource:

  • Images:

    • Real world resource:

MINI GAME assignments

Upload your Mini Game .SWF and .FLA files and embed them here.

Each time you complete an assignment, upload the files again. Remember to rename your new file so you do not overwrite the old one. (You can add a number to the name, i.e. YourUsername_MiniGame_1.fla, YOurUsername_MiniGame_2.fla, etc.)

The last tutorial gave me the full game with the keyboard commands already in place. I used keyboard navigation in my minigame so I hope that will suffice.
