PLAYING TO LEARN assignments

Pick two games you played before and write a review about each of them. Choose one professional and one student made game.

Review 1: Katrina: Tempest in Cresent City, the purpose of this game is to teach about how dangerous Hurricanes can be even after they strike and to teach about what happened to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina stuck. From a learners point of view I'd say that this game is a great way to learn about Katrina, but from a developer's point of view I'd say that this game needs more of a challenge. The design and scientific concept is great. This game makes it clear what I'm supposed to do and it works very well. This game could use more challenges. I'd like to learn how to make a game with a great design and a scientific concept like this game.

Review 2: Super Toaster!, the purpose of this game is to teach about Global Warming. From a learner's and a developer's point of view I'd say this game is the best way to teach about Global Warming. The design and scientific concept is very excellent. The game works very well and makes it clear what to do. No suggestions. I'd like to learn how to make a very excellent game like this.

CHOOSING A TOPIC assignments

1. Explore Subjects, Topics and Concepts that Matter to You

  • I want to learn more about the 27 amendments. Learning about America's History is hard to learn. A game can help by teaching people about Civics in a fun way.

  • Now choose ONE Concept to Focus On: Civics
    • The Constitution protects your rights.
    • They should make sure to read everything on the game.
    • There wouldn't be so many innocent people in jail.

2. Identify a Game Genre For Exploring Your Topic

  • Genre 1: Action and Adventure
    • Why I chose it: The Character in the game could go on a wild adventure to rescue the Bill of Rights.

  • Genre 2: Music Game
    • Why I chose it: It would be fun to make a music game to teach kids about Civics and after every song they collect a part of the Constitutional Bill of Rights.

3. Find Content Resources for Your Game Topic

Find a set of online and real world resources where you can gather facts, images and sounds to use in your game.
