Supreme Basketball

CIVICS GAME CONCEPT

Our game is about basketball. It is in the function part of the Civics framework. When playing this game, besides playing basketball, you will also be learning about civics. It will teach you about the First Amendment and what it means. There wil be a case and in the answer you must tell which one of the three possible answers was most impotant when dealing with the case. This game is fun and also educational.Children in the 4th and 5th grades will learn what they will need to know through in social studies class in the middle school. This game will have a basketball court, and there will be three answers to the case you read. You must use the arrow keys and drag the basketball to the correct answer. If you are right, you will be given points. If you are wrong, you will not win the game. In this game, if you are wrong, it will tell you why and give you the definition of why you are wrong. That way the player will understand the concept better and won't confused.

GAME PITCH

  • Intro screen: Supreme Basketball

  • Team Introduction

Cassie and Heather We both have worked together on our Paper Prototype. Then we both worked together on our Team Page. We are both going to work together on our game on Flash. Cassie: I will be the action person and the manager. Heather:I am going be the person who does all the animation and sounds.

  • Learning Topic

The subject of all the games is Civics. The subject of our game is The Judicial Branch of Government. With the Judicial Branch of government is the Supreme Court.

  • Audience

We are designing our game for the elementary kids. We want to design our game for the elementary kids because we did not know that when we were in elenementary school. It will help them in the future.

  • Game Play

The player sees the other justices on the basketball court. The rules of the game: you have to make a shot in the basketball goal, then you go though two games of basketball. Then, you will answer a case that involves two kids and their principals.

  • Fun Factor

This is the way the game is fun: you are playng basketball while you are still learning about Civics and the Judicial Branch of government. Which what we mean is after you play your two games of basketball, you will be answering the two cases. Then you win the game.

  • Smart Factor

Our game teaches about the Judical branch of goverment. It will teach you a little about what the first admenment. The kids could learn by playing it. The kids could learn about the Judicial Branch of government by the two cases at the end of each of the levels.

  • Style Factor

We will be using Flash for all of our graphic/animations. We will be using different sounds from different wedsites.

  • Originality Factor

What makes our game special is that there is a basketball court in the Supreme Court. Our game is going to be about the game basketball. You will play two games of basketball, and then you will answer one case. There are two levels like this.

PAPER PROTOTYPE

  • Date of Paper Prototype: October 2009
  • This paper prototyping explains a lot about this game. But there are a few things that we had to take away because the time we had left to get it done. The paper prototype says that you will get to chose a character. Well, we saw no reason for even putting people in here because on the game you have the ball court and then you have to drag the ball to where you think the right answer is, and if you choose the right answer, then there will be a sign the pops up that says you have won this game.It also says you will shoot the basketball. It was much eaiser to make it to where you just drag the basketball to the correct answer. At the beginning we noticed that it said there will be a basketball shade in and out which would mean that it was loading we changed that to a regular loading scene. It shows that after reading the case you must choose who said you want to be on .Well, it isn't like that anymore we made it where after reading the case. You have three answers, and you have to pick the one that our game deals with the most.We only had time to do one complete level.

RESEARCH

List 3 sources you used to research your game:
Source:http://www.ourcourts.org/flashgames/1/index.html

  • What you learned:Well I learned alot about the rights and how they work. That is why I started wanting to learn more abot rights beacuse I thought they where a very interresting thing to know about.
  • Why you chose this source:Well on the our courts website they had a few games that I really liked but there was this one game that really caught my eye and I really wanted to make a game like it.This game was called Do I have a right.Well thats what I did I made my cases similar to theirs.

Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

  • What you learned:Well I learned what the first admenment is about and what it consist of.The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution is part of the Bill of Rights. The amendment prohibits the making of any law "respecting an establishment of religion", impeding the free exercise of religion, infringing on the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievanc.
  • Why you chose this source:I think I used this website because I really like wikipedia and I think it always has the right ansers ithelps me and I depend on it.

Source:http://www.constitution.org/billofr_.htm

  • What you learned:I learned alot about the bill of right and what they consist of and how they work.On September 25, 1789, the First Congress of the United States therefore proposed to the state legislatures 12 amendments to the Constitution that met arguments most frequently advanced against it. The first two proposed amendments, which concerned the number of constituents for each Representative and the compensation of Congressmen, were not ratified. Articles 3 to 12, however, ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures, constitute the first 10 amendments of the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights
  • Why you chose this source:I think that I chose this website because that it had alot of interrestin pics and facts and also some links. This website really helped me through out my game.

NARROWING THE TOPIC

  • The Topic of Your Game:

The topic of our game is to teach students about the first amendent.

  • Specific amendment/freedom/right/aspect of the journey/Cabinet member responsibilities you BOTH have decided to narrow your game to:

The first amendment. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

  • The title of the game you BOTH agreed upon. Explain how it reflects your topic:

Supreme Basketball because our game is based upon the Supreme Court.

  • Your storyline:

What role is the player going to assume to make this game fun? In our game this is how you will play. The basketball player will be the judge. The judge is the one who chooses who they think should win the case. There will be one case, for now. The first case is going to go something like this, Heather wears her favorite country music t-shirt, and the school says that the shirt is not allowed. The shirt is freedom of expression, because it is her favorite country t-shirt. So, Mr. Campbell askes her to change it and she refuses. So, there willbe facts to pop up, and rights for the judge to decide between. You must pick which side that you want to be on. After learning from the facts, the judge will get to play basketball. All of the cases reflect upon the first amendment. Then, they will choose who they think should win. Then at last, they win the game. Only if they choose the right side.
