Game Concept 09-29-09 40 Minutes I hammered out the rest of the concept for my game today. I think I got a pretty good handle on what I want to do. The video above is me trying to explain it in a rather sad manner. Public speaking isn't really my forte. The basic idea is a Frogger type game, with an emphasis on safe driving on roads heavily populated with coal trucks. Still a bit of work to do.
Basics 10-13-09 3-4 Hours Have been working on the paper prototype for the game. I have a pretty good idea what I want all of my screens to look like, and how things are going to move. Right now I'm trying to decide how many levels there will be total and the skill multiplier required for each one. The level paper prototype looks pretty neat, I'm kind of proud of it. Still to be finalized are the information screens and the "crash" screen.
1Up 10-20-09 ???Not much work done on the actual game this week. I admit, I was slacking. I have finalized my idea on how the extra life mechanic will work. You start with three lives left(well, four. 3 2 1 and 0). If you hit a vehicle on the road, you lose a life. Select levels will have a timer, not until the end of the level, but as a bonus. If you can make it safely across the highway within the time, you can gain an extra life, up to 5(6 lives total including the 0).
ROAR 11-17-09 The last three weeks, HAI've been working pretty hard these past few weeks getting my demo ready to go. I'm really happy with how things are looking so far. I have one or two background screens left to make and some boundries to set, but the car moves on WSAD and turns with Q and E, and the hit test and scoreboard seems to be working!
Actionscripting 1-20-1020 minutesDid the Introduction to Actionscript exercise. Most of this wasn't exactly a mystery because of all the work we'd already done on the games last semester. Life feels so strangely out of order.
Programming 2- -10 15 minutesYay for Programming Practices. I went back into my game and added some comments to make things a little easier. Even with that though, the code is still a bit of a mess from where I just copy pasted a ton of stuff near the end of last semester. "Ohh I wonder what will happen if I do this," is not a good way to go about planning your code. Seriously.
We Learn 2- -10 15 minutesLearning from others and Finding Solutions was pretty dry. My GoogleFu is very mighty. It makes small school children soil themselves in total awe. Rawr be afraid. On a more serious note, I do love google for finding things out. Like when the tutorial given is for FlashMX and we're using CS4. Knowing how to slap Google around makes life so much easier.
Effects and Moving 2- -10 30 MinutesMotion paths take two! Okay this changed a little between CS3 and CS4 so I had to utilize that awesome GoogleFu of mine to work it out. Check out all your tutorials people, some of this stuff is waaay out of date for the programs we're using. Like the Text Effects one. That doesn't exist anymore!
Scrolling 3- -10 40 minutesThis was damn frustrating. I don't like the tutorial at all. Its confusing and downloading the flash file just makes it even more confusing. We figured out the basics of it eventually, but damn.
Score Keeping 3- -1020 minutesMore stuff that we did last semester. Forgive me for not reposting the fly catcher to my blog, but I can't take the buzzing anymore.
Collisions 3- -10 20 minutesThere's collision detection all over my game so this comes kind of late, but I did another example anyway. The balls, they bounce.
Sound 03-30-1040 minutes I've been letting this little part slide. New version of the game up with sound! Must remember to shorten the sound played when the SUV is moving because no one wants to end up listening to 20 minutes of VRRRRRRRVRRRRRRRVRRRRRRRRRRRRVRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.
Charging my lazers! 04-7-1015 minutes New generation of my game! This week's assignment was the preloader so I went ahead and added a nice simple one into my game. I'm quite proud of it. I may even name it. George is a good strong name. Kingly even. Things are shaping up!
Have you got the time? 04-13-1040 minutes Did some work with timers today. The stuff I uploaded has a 10 second count down timer on the first frame, followed by a 10 second delay on the second one. Now that I have this knowledge I may have to do a bit of redesigning on how my game works. Yippee.
Fonts 04-13-1040 minutes I was editing a post then hit back. Oops. Since I already had my timer working I did some stuff on my game really quick. The intro needed cleaned up from where I'd used a custom font that I'd later lost into the black hole known as my computer. So, I decided to go on with my more cartoony theme and go with Comic Sans as my font of choice. Not too creative, but its on every computer and I don't have to worry about things looking weird between my home computer and the school machines. Quake in fear infidels.
Driving Cars 04-14-101 hour Be afraid for your lives, I actually spent time, outside of class, doing something that wasn't specifically assigned to me. In an effort to start finishing up my game, I've started making the new art. First up, the player's SUV. Obviously environmentalism was not one of my topics since I chose a H3 Hummer as my model. That's right. You're driving a hummer. But you still can't cross the medians so don't even try it sucker. I hope to knock out the rest of the art within the next couple days.
Driving Cars Redux 04-16-102 hours The rest of the art update is complete! Check my blog to see the images outside of the game, I couldn't find a good place to show them off here on the wiki. On top of fixing the art I made some changes in preparation of creating more levels, moved some sound files around (the crash sound now works and the VROOM has been moved to the title screen.) My next goal is to get the Crash and You Win scenes created.
Bucket-o-Fun 04-20-102 hours I did quite a bit today. First was Drag and Drop. Short and Simple. Then was platforming. I had some trouble getting the code on the tutorial to work but the two examples helped a ton. Yes, my dude is bouncing. Makes it more fun, I swear. Last thing I did today was fix up the buttons on my game and add in a hit test to end the levels. Just the 1Up timer to work out then I'll be ready to make multiple levels.
AHHHH RUUUUN 04-27-101 hours Coded an enemy. That was awesome. I like making him spin around the screen. Tutorial was easy for cone. More tutorials should be nice and clear like that. I also did some major work on the game today. There's a second level and a game over screen. Talk about being productive, eh? The Game Over screen is still a bit buggy (as is the level now that I think about it) but I'm pretty confident that things are coming to a close. Huzzah
Final Stretch 05-04-10last week Just been working on my game for the past week. I'm up to three levels, with a game over and you win screens. The game is fully functional, and any work I do now is purely cosmetic. Huzzah for this mess being over.
Roll the Credits 05-11-101 hours Last minute tweaking before I go and give my presentation this afternoon. Making sure I've got my wiki up to date and what not. Only one change to the game. A credits screen. Look out for my summation of the semester blog post.
