Individual Assignments

Post all of the course assignments you complete as an individual learner on this page. (Team work should be posted on your Team page.)

PLAYING TO LEARN assignments

Pick two games you played before and write a review about each of them. Choose one professional and one student made game.

Make sure you include the following points in your reviews:

   * Name and purpose of the game
   * Describe it from a learner's point of view and a developer’s point of view
   * Design Analysis (Does it look good? Does it clearly illustrate the scientific the concept?)
   * Usability Analysis (Is it clear what you need to do as a user? Does it work well?)
   * Suggestions for improvement
   * 2-3 things that you would like to learn how to do (in terms of functionality, design or content)

Comments

Game Title: 3rd World Farmer

Game's Purpose: The purpose of this game is to survive as long as possible as a farmer in a 3rd world setting.

Learner Description: From a learner's point of view, the game displays some clever things. There are roll-out menus and drag-and-drop item selection and usage. There is also some minimal unit management as you control a farming family, not just a single farmer.

Developer Description: From a developer's perspective, its a solid game that would work wonderfully in 3D. The graphics are nice, and I particularly like the graphical style. Too many flash/shockwave game lean to the cartoon stylization.

Design Analysis: The concept is clear, its portrayed correctly, there's lots of dim color overtones, lots of lean towards darker shades of brown, and gray, setting a particular mood and atmosphere. It accurately displays what I've seen of 3rd world countries.

Usability Analysis: I never read the/any tutorials or guides. The user interface is clear, the point is well made through in-game messages. Easy to learn, hard to master. Perfect for a strategic game.

Suggestions for Improvement: There are some slight annoyances with using the mouse for everything. In most of the strategy games I've played, RMB is used to deselect, whilst in this game, it pulls up a flash right-click menu.

Things you would like to learn to do: All of it. I know nothing of Flash, so... Any and all knowledge would be great.

Game Title (with developer title): Zeit Geist by The Five Experimental Ninjas

Game's Purpose: The purpose of this game is to travel back in time to stop a generic villain from doing villainous things.

Learner Description: Well... Standard Flash aspects are there, it is a platformer and you do control a little guy, so the devs obviously know more than myself...

Developer Description: It's not the most fun thing to play, the graphics are pretty average for Flash and the gameplay is quite choppy with low flexibility. I'm not totally downing it or trying to be cynical, it just is...

Design Analysis: The storyline is cheesy and the gameplay needs improved.

Usability Analysis: Other than choppy gameplay, its fine...

Suggestions for Improvement: As I've been saying... Gameplay flow, graphics and storyline are the only problems. The rest is solid.

Things you would like to learn to do: Again, everything...

CHOOSING A TOPIC assignments

1. Explore Subjects, Topics and Concepts that Matter to You

  • Brainstorm specific topics and concepts in each subject area that you want to explore in a game. Think about something that is really hard to learn. How a game can help represent this complex concept, and explain it in a playful and experiential way.

  • Now choose ONE Concept to Focus On: ______Music______
    • What are the most important facts people should know about your topic? Music theory, basic understanding of any given instrument... Metal is awesome?
    • What actions should people do in order to understand this topic? There are plenty of articles covering all of the above which can be found easily through google and wikipedia.
    • What is a positive outcome that could happen if people learned more about this topic? More people would listen to more complex music... Instead of this mind mushing "Rap" drivel...

2. Identify a Game Genre For Exploring Your Topic

Genre 1: Music games

Why I chose it: I like music games. Music games are also one of the latest gaming crazes, thus, the more popular something is, the more people pay attention to it.

Genre 2: RPG/Party

Why I chose it: I like those too. These are, and have always been, quite popular. Social interaction is popular, why wouldn't social interaction via gaming? Competition against friends and/or random people is always a favored past time amongst gamers.

3. Find Content Resources for Your Game Topic

Find a set of online and real world resources where you can gather facts, images and sounds to use in your game.

Spoiler Alert!: Nothing happens at the end... Its a boring Oscar nomination. Even I'm surprised this thing got past the box office. Probably the "Revolutionary Road" crowd here...
