Topic Assignments

Read the Globaloria Community Participation Guidelines

In the table below are some basic guidelines for making sure you're interacting with other people safely and kindly on the Internet. Read them carefully. You will be expected to follow them. If you have anything you think is missing from this list, discuss it with your educator, and ask him or her to add it to the table. Also review our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

Topic Decisions Notes
Personal Information Don't post your last name, IM name, phone number, email address, or real address on the wiki. Be smart. Don't give up your personal info!
Show Your Work Upload all your classwork onto the wiki, and update your learning log after every class.
Blog You should be blogging at least two times a week. It doesn't need to be long, but it has to be done.
Social and Educational Games All games should be focused on educational and social issues. Inspire someone to learn with your cool game!
Be Respectful Don't mess with other people's stuff. Listen to what others have to say. Use proper classroom etiquette.
Be Professional don't disrupt other people. This applies outside of class, too!
Constructive Feedback Use the Discussion tab on the wiki. Be constructive and honest, but stay polite. For every criticism you give a project, also name one thing you liked about it. Only give feedback if it will be useful - just saying "this thing is bad" is not helpful.
Use of Photos Photos and images are good, just don't post anything disgusting or too sexual. Remember, stay professional. Cite your source if someone else owns the image.
Sharing Code Highly encouraged -- this is an open source community and we share to learn. It's fine to make modified versions of other people's projects, as long as you give them credit. One place to give credit is in your Project Notes.
Work Together You can work on your own, but if you're in a group be sure to include everyone. Just because someone isn't saying anything doesn't mean they don't have anything to say. Try to get everyone involved.
Help Out If you see your peers or teacher struggling, and you know how to help - or just have an idea - tell them. Globaloria is about sharing information, not hoarding it.
High Level of Participation 5-6 hours per week is expected Ask any athlete or artist -- If you want to become good at something, you have to work hard!
Evaluation Know how you're being evaluated. Read over the rubric to make sure you know what's expected of you.
Protect the Equipment Take care of the computers. Don't eat or drink around them or be forceful with keyboards, mice, and screens. If you break your computer, you're only hurting yourself and your teammates.
Safety Alert your community leaders if you feel that anything on the wiki is dangerous or inappropriate. Tell your instructor or send them an email.

Check Each Other's Wikis and Blogs

Pair up with a classmate and look over each other's user profiles, social profiles, and blogs to make sure nothing was posted that could raise potential safety or legal concerns.

Check for the following potentially problematic things:

  • Last names
  • Email addresses
  • AIM/GChat screen names
  • Real addresses
  • Copyrighted photos, videos and other media without source credit

Update the Wiki

  • Leave a message on the Talk Tab of your partner's User page with your comments about their User Profile, Social Profile and Blog.

Update the Blog

  • Write a Blog post reflecting on why you need to protect your privacy on the Internet.

After you finish these assignments, continue to the Playing to Learn topic.
